I'm Planning an Event (Festivals, Concerts, Parades, Races, etc.)

Planning an Event in Sheridan?

Not every event requires a City permit! Whether you're organizing a concert, festival, parade, fundraiser, or community gathering, the need for a permit depends on where your event takes place and what activities are involved.

Do I Need a Special Event Permit?

A City Special Event Permit is generally required if your event involves any of the following:

  • City Property: Organized event activities on City-owned property, including parks, streets, sidewalks, or public parking areas.

  • Street Closures or Traffic Control: Closing or restricting public streets, sidewalks, or parking areas, or requiring City traffic control.

  • City Services: Requesting City resources or services to support your event.

  • Alcohol: Selling or serving alcohol that requires a City-issued Malt Beverage or Catering Permit.

Events on private or other non-City-owned property generally do not require a City Special Event Permit unless one of the above conditions applies.

When Should I Apply?

Event Type Application Timeline
Events without alcohol At least 21 days before the event
Events involving alcohol permits At least 60 days before the event

Late applications may be subject to additional fees. Applications submitted fewer than seven business days before an event are not guaranteed processing or approval.

What Does It Cost?

  • Special Event Permit: $50 per application for events without alcohol, including multiple dates submitted together.

  • Events with alcohol: $50 per 24-hour alcohol permit authorization. Additional permitting fees may apply when a separate licensed caterer provides alcohol.

  • Late fees: $50 for non-alcohol applications submitted within 21 days; $100 for alcohol applications submitted within 60 days.

I'm Operating a Mobile Business (Food Trucks, Mobile Vendors, Vending Courts)

Operating a Mobile Business in Sheridan?

Planning to operate a food truck, mobile retail business, or other vending unit in Sheridan? The City requires Mobile Vending Permits for most businesses selling food, merchandise, or services from a vehicle or trailer.

Do I Need a Mobile Vending Permit?

A permit is generally required if you're selling from:

  • A food truck or food trailer.

  • A vehicle or trailer used to sell merchandise, products, or services.

  • Another motorized mobile vending unit operating within City limits.

A Mobile Vending Permit is generally NOT required if:

  • You're selling from a standalone table, tent, or booth rather than a vehicle or trailer.

  • You're a vendor specifically included on an approved Special Event Permit and operating only during that event.

  • You're operating exclusively within an approved Mobile Vending Court.

  • You're selling raw fruits, vegetables, or grains that you personally grew.

What About Mobile Vending Courts?

A Mobile Vending Court is a designated private-property location established for the ongoing operation of multiple mobile vendors.

Vendors operating exclusively within an approved Mobile Vending Court do not need separate individual City Mobile Vending Permits.

I'm Serving Alcohol at an Event (Malt Beverage, Catering, Open Container)

Serving Alcohol at an Event in Sheridan?

Planning to serve or sell alcohol at a special event, fundraiser, wedding, or community gathering? Depending on the type of event, location, and alcohol being served, a City-issued permit may be required.

Which Alcohol Permit Do I Need?

Permit Type What It's For
Malt Beverage Permit Allows a responsible person age 21 or older to apply for permission to sell or serve beer and wine coolers at an event. Does not authorize wine or distilled spirits.
Catering Permit Allows eligible Wyoming-licensed retail or resort liquor licensees to provide alcoholic beverages at events outside their licensed premises.
Open Container Permit Allows possession or consumption of alcohol in designated locations where open containers would otherwise be restricted. Does not authorize alcohol sales.

What Else Should I Know?

  • One application covers all three permit types. The application will guide you through the appropriate questions based on your event.

  • Permits are issued for specific dates and locations. Additional permits may be required for multi-day events.

  • A Special Event Permit may also be required. Events involving City property, City services, or other activities covered by the Special Events Policy may have additional requirements.

  • BYOB is not permitted at public events.

When Should I Apply?

Submit your Alcohol Permit application at least 21 days before your event.

I Need to Use or Close a Street (Non-Construction Related)

Need to Use or Close a City Street?

Planning a block party, neighborhood gathering, parade, or other activity that requires temporarily closing or restricting a City street, sidewalk, or public right-of-way? Depending on your plans, a City permit may be required.

Do I Need a Street Closure Permit?

A permit may be required if you're planning to:

  • Temporarily close a City street or alley for a block party or neighborhood gathering.

  • Reserve or restrict public streets, sidewalks, or parking areas for an organized activity.

  • Place barricades or otherwise limit normal public access to a street or right-of-way.

Is your street closure part of a larger event?

If you're organizing a parade, race, festival, or other public event that involves City streets, you may need a Special Event Permit instead. The City will help determine which permitting process applies.

What About Construction?

Construction-related street closures use a different permitting process.

If you need to close or restrict a street for excavation, utility work, construction, or similar activities, please use the Construction Road Closure information on this page instead.

When Should I Apply?

Submit your application as early as possible to allow time for review and coordination of any necessary street closures or traffic restrictions.
