Russian Hawthorn (Crataegus ambigua)
Ideal Location:

Soil type preference: Prefers well-drained soils. Sand, loam, and clay soils all fine.
pH preference: Prefers alkaline soils.
Moisture preference: Prefers moist or dry soils; tolerates drought. Does not do well with standing water.
Light preference: Prefers full sun.
Salt tolerance:
Other: Tolerant of urban pollution.
Pest susceptibility and tolerance: No serious pest problems. Susceptible to cedar rust diseases, fire blight, leaf spots, scale and mites.
Notable foliage and flower characteristics: Showy white flowers followed by bright red fruit, which persists well into the winter. Fine, almost feathery foliage. It has spines, so be careful!
Height and spread: On average, grows to be 12 to 24 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide. Moderate growth rate.
Form: Can be trained into a number of different forms. Twisted vase-like shrub or low-hanging tree, for example. Not recommended as a street tree.
Native status and zone: Zones 4-8. Non-native.
Other information: Russian hawthorn are good for pollinators and other wildlife.
